Sorry if I miss read the post. I just wanted to make sure that if one does
extended drains to make sure to do an analysis.
Soot/solids are part of an analysis. This is an area that tells you if your
filter is doing its job or not. It is especially important on diesels. Here
is why you see mostly diesels running the bypass filter set up, mainly on
larger sump vehicles like the Cummins and power stroke that hold 4 gallons
of oil as well as the big rigs. Cummins did a study on soot in oil and came
to the conclusion that if the soot can be controlled it greatly enhances the
life of the engine.
Synthetic is a really good cleaner so it will help keep the inside of your
engine clean compared to conventional oil. It helps to keep the soot in
suspension a little better than conventional can.
It is up to the individual as to what oil they want to run. I know a
gentleman that has a 91 ECO just like mine and it has 312k miles on it and
he never had any problems with it other than normal wear items. He has had
it in the family since new and all he has ever run in it is Shell Rotella
15w-40 with 5k oil changes. It still runs strong and he has informed me that
it never has had any problems with the head gasket and that it is still the
factory gasket on there today. The car is in great shape and you can tell
they have taken great care of it.
In my situation I do not have the time to be under my vehicles every two
months changing oil, so extended drains are worth their weight in gold to
me. Between my one daughter's therapies, and my other daughters, dance,
piano, and voice lessons, there are only so many hours in a day after
getting home from work to get things done. Weekends I try to make family
time, kids grow up way to fast.
I have a 1965 Impala SS sitting in the garage that I bought back in 85. Not
much has changed on it since then. I guess when I retire maybe then I can
finally get it restored. :)
