"Dad'd finally had it with his on the Passat and just put a "later" filter 
in it (that only has the in and out elbows for hoses) and brass barbed
fitting'd the return hoses together.  Filter's cheaper, no thermo thingie to
buy also (and have leak) and the bubbles are gone for good!"


Does the return not run through the filter then?  Wouldn't be an issue
unless it gets really cold - the "return through the filter" set-up marked
the end of any gelling problems we had in the winter, as the warm fuel
returned from the engine kept the fuel in the filter warmer.  Of course fuel
is probably better managed now than in the past, but in cold climates, I'd
be afraid to by-pass the filter with the return.
