[Vwdiesel] longevity of 86 jetta?

I have an '86 TD with over 650,000 kms, and an '87 with 500,000 kms. Both have had a rather long, hard life, but what is going to end at least one, soon, is body rust. Not structural stuff, but every place that had a stone chip 20 years ago on the '87 is now a fist-sized hole! The '86 is rusting everywhere, bit by bit, but should be useable for a couple more years. The 87 works and is safe, but the roadside inspection nazis will get it one day.
