Hi William;
I drove the first 358 miles early in the morning running about 70
mph. I also had to go from 350 feet above sea-level at my place to over 5000
feet above sea level to get over the Blue Mtn's I got 48 mpg. I was plenty
early so I decided I would not drive over 60 mph for the last 300 miles and
I got almost 58 mpg. The total fuel for the 658 miles to Twin Falls was 12.7
gallons. For a 51.8 avg. On the way home I drove 60 to 65 mph and I used
12.4 gallons for 660 miles for a 53.2 avg. I just put together this 1981
Dasher station wagon. It has a 1.6 N/A diesel that I built a couple of years
ago and it has about 20,000 miles on it. It is built on a Turbo block that
has 1mm oversize turbo pistons and oil squiters. The exhaust is handled by a
4 into 1 exhaust manifold from an 86 Audi 1.8 gas engine. It has a 2 inch
exhaust pipe and a short turbo muffler. The head is secured by Race-ware
head studs. I'm running Evans waterless coolant and the oil is Rotella T
synthetic. The transmission is a VW Quantum turbo diesel 5 speed tranny with
a 9Q code. The tires are 185-65-14 on VW Jetta 16 valve alloy rims. I do
think that Dasher wagons must be pretty slippery since I have always gotten
better mileage from a 1.6 diesel in a Dasher wagon than in a Rabbit sedan or
a Rabbit pickup.

Brian Decker, if you have been following the various comments, you know I am
also reviving an '81 Dasher diesel wagon. I have got my Dasher to get back
on the road but waiting for proof of insurance so I can renew my Calif.
license tabs. In getting 53 MPG with your Dasher, did you poke along at 45
to 50 MPG or did you drive at the speed limit plus a little bit? Once I
begin driving it, I will be checking my MPG too. Do you have the stock
Dasher & stock 4 speed? I don't recall who, but someone has a Quantum diesel
& 5 speed in their Dasher diesel.
