[Vwdiesel] MPG results are in for the 92 A2 Ecodiesel, 3rd tank, still 39...

  First off with only 3 tanks of fuel through it you still need to 
break it in. DON'T be gentle like we've always heard with gassers!
Load it up and go for a hard drive in the mountains if you have 
any nearby.  Otherwise load several peopl and stuff in it for a 
hard, 4 hour drive.  This should really be done after about 50 
miles from startup but...  :-)
  Mileage usually starts going up about the 3rd to 5th tank and 
keeps it up to about 4K miles sometimes!  If the rings aren't 
seated yet then that could explain the smell.  Otherwise I'd 
look at tweeking the timing a little.  Max fueling screw wouldn't 
do it since it could only overfuel it at or near full throttle, not 
at idle or driving along.
  Things you could do to improve mileage.  Clean up the head 
(porting).  Usually seems to help power more than mileage.  
Total Seal rings help with both.  If you have the typical tranny 
then changing to a higher geared one could easily help.  2 1/2" 
exhaust will help with power and EGT and may or may not help 
mileage.  
  Doug has done a pressure adjustment ala Hagar that helped 
his quite a bit.  I haven't been driving mine so I still haven't 
tried it yet.  I only get 39mpg with my '85 Jetta and power 
is good but not what it should be.
