Doug-
If you are fairly mechanically inclined and have a Bentley manual, I bet you can do the job! And I know when you are done, your confidence will be increased exponentially.
However, for your first time, I would say to allow a good amount of time to complete the job. Don't be rushed, have another car to drive if necessary. Just take your time and you'll be fine.
Anyway, it doesn't seem like there are any really special tools necessary to complete the job. The only thing I can think of is that you do need a 9mm 12 point socket to remove the bolts that hold the flywheel on. The rest should be not much more than regular tools you should already have.
You'll need some way to support the engine while the transmission is out. Either a "cherry picker" (engine hoist), a jack from beneath with a block of wood to protect the oil pan, or something else from above. (I've seen people talk about using a 4x4 laid across the fenders with chains holding the engine.) If you know someone with welding skills, have them recreate the VW engine holder pictured in many Bentley manuals. I had the pleasure of borrowing one once and it was the best. But I've used the other methods too (except the 4x4).
You'll also need a second jack to lower the transmission out of the car.
It is a bit of a trick to line everything up when putting it all back together, but isn't too bad if you have a friend to help watch from above while you line things up from below.
And keep in mind we're here to help too.

All other transitions are smooth. My understanding is that replacing
the clutch and turning the flywheel should resolve the problem (have
previously replaced all motor mounts). I have read through the project,
but have never replaced a clutch before in any vehicle. Is this
something that a first timer can do with a book, or is this something to
look over the shoulder of a pro before trying one solo? If an average
do-it-yourselfer can attempt, what special tools are must haves.
