Not sure on the battery question, but BE CAREFUL with the jump starter!
It's a known shortcoming that the gauge clusters on the B4 Passats
are VERY sensitive to low voltage. A weak battery can fry the cluster
and they are unobtanium. This is why, when you look at Passats for
sale of that vintage, so many have inaccurate or abnormally low
mileages on the odometer. The clusters died and have been replaced.
I know someone used to be able to fix them, but I've lost that info a
computer or two ago. You might be able to find more info on Fred's.
Just a heads-up, in case you weren't aware...
