[Vwdiesel] Engine won't turn off?

My van did that - plunger stuck in the "up" position - a few times. It also
stuck in the down position a few times (no start). Seemed to coincide with
the original lowering of sulpher in diesel fuel a few yrs ago (late 90s?).
Replaced the solenoid the first time, which did not help. Started using a
fuel lubricant from local bosch store (similar to standyne?), and problem
went away and did not come back ever since. Maybe walls along plunger are
rough in this IP? I can't explain it...
Pain in the butt before it cleared though... I still keep the wrenches
necessary to pull the plunger out and run without it if the need arises, but
no problems for at least 5-6 yrs now (knock on wood!!).

After I turn the ignition switch off the engine still runs. I checked
to see if voltage was still on the fuel shutoff solenoid on the IP and
there is no voltage, so the circuit is working fine. Can the shutoff
plunger become magnetized over time and not fall back to stop fuel flow?
The other thing I have noticed is the crappy fuel I've been getting over
the last year or so. I have a glass filter before the oem one and you
can see the crud pile up. The last tank full, it seems like there was
some varnish type residue in it. I've since changed the filters and
gotten a new tank of diesel and it seems to be clear so far.
Thanks,
Bud
