I've seen it suggested that you should take a tap and use it to cut into the old bushing and pull it out.
That said, I have never replaced one of them when replacing a starter, and have yet to see an issue because of this. It sounds like to me that you would probably have a hard time seeing this bushing and the hole it goes into on the car (I'm betting the starter is back by the firewall--haven't ever played with a Dasher.)
It would be a real pain if you dropped the new bushing down into the bellhousing. I think if it were me, I *might* hold onto it and only replace it if the engine or trans is ever removed.
Others may disagree, but that is my $.02

For those of you who don't know, the Dasher & Quantum engines are mounted in a north-south fashion where as the Rabbit, Golf & Jetta are traverse or east-west mounted. However, except for mounting brackets & possibly oil pans, I understand the Rabbit & Dasher diesels are interchangeable. Although I have two 1981Rabbit diesels, I have not worked on them much, & may not get around to it in view of my age & health. Right now, I am putting my efforts primarily into my '81 Dasher diesel wagon. I also have a 1954 Hudson Hornet, worth about $14,000 (and for sale) that needs brake work & that will have priority over the Rabbits. From the looks of things, I probably took the right course in removing the right front engine mount since I think the other course would be to remove the intake & exhaust manifolds which would take more time, & there still might be enough clearance to remove the starter with the
engine mount in the way. Of note, the starter rebuilder gave me what looks like a copper bearing for the end of the starter shaft that looks like it fits into the bell housing. Don't know yet if the old one will be easy or hard to remove. Any suggestions here?
