The lowest price for diesel I have seen in Grass Valley, CA is $2.72 a gallon & the lowest local price for regular is $1.85 but it is cheaper in Sacramento. I don't complain about the gas tax but the tax should be earmarked for only road/highway maintenance, construction, etc. Roads don't just magically appear, they have to be paid for in some manor. The ones who have gouged us are the oil well owners, middle east & domestic. The oil companies have made lots of money at our expense because they own lots of oil wells.
I have been interested in small fuel efficient cars since the '50s, when gas was .25 cents a gallon. My first small car was a 1940 Willys bought in 1952 for $15. My first new car was a 1957 VW which cost $1595 including white sidewall tires. Had to wait 6 months for delivery back then. Since then I have always chosen fuel efficient cars, mostly foreign, as daily drivers. Except for a 1963 Rambler Classic 550, 3 speed with OD, I never bought a new American car until I bought a new 1996 Ford Escort 5 speed. I would have bought a diesel but affordable new diesels were not available. During my lifetime, I have bought the following new diesels: 1979 Rabbit, 1983 Nissan Sentra (averaged 42 MPG for the 50,000 miles I drove it), & 1985 Mazda 626 diesel (driven for 170,000 miles & 10 years). Ever since I was old enough to drive & own my own car, I have always been concerned with fuel economy, even when gas was cheap!
