I'm 41 - took my drivers test in my Dad's 82 Rabbit diesel. Hated that car (slow, loud, NOT COOL!!)... Then got out and was better able to calculate the dollars saved by that thing: less fuel, reliable, (relatively) easy to fix. Lack of power meant tires, brakes, clutch, and other wear components lasted much longer...
I've since owned an 84 Rabbit diesel myself, owned 91 and 92 ecodiesel jettas, the latter now w/ 332,000 miles, 82 vanagon diesel (broken odometer many times; now estimated at 300,000 miles based on fuel usage), and have broken into this century with my wifes 09 jetta tdi (disappointing).
I grew up on a farm, where I honed my very functional (as opposed to professional) shade tree skills...
I'm an Athletic Trainer / Physical Therapist and teach in those programs full-time at Marquette University in Milwaukee, WI. Live on 35 acres north of Milwaukee 30 miles from home, with my growing VW herd, a JD 70D, and a tolken Dodge truck. Plenty of miles to Milwaukee for work or kids activities!!
Often lurking - occassionally contributing...
