I agree with Justin's point when traveling out of town. But for in-town driving, I don't want to wear more clothing than necessary for work or whatever I'm doing plus a coat to get from the car to the building. Just impracticle to be changing in/out of clothes each time I went into a building.
Thus, I want a nice- toasty car to drive around town in.
BTW, I don't think automatic transmission equipped TDI's came with coolant glow plugs. Also not sure about the first edition of the TDI.
Until recently, the extent of my TDI experience was auto tranny cars and Dad's '96 and I hadn't noticed the glow plug heaters until I worked on a manual transmission TDI New Beetle.
