I would think that at least one slug has galled the bore. What is the
engine code on the block? I might have a good short block at least. Perhaps
a whole engine

I can't get it to turn over! The girl who eventually gave it to me said
that she had checked the oil the night before it quit driving and it looked
full. The next day it stopped, and took 3 quarts to top off. No large
puddles were observed before or after adding the oil (so I kinda think she
may have mis-read the dipstick).

to lack of oil, the cam usually suffers first and is damaged. Because it
was fairly easy to do, I pulled the intake and valve cover off tonight, but
observed no galling/damage there.
