[Vwdiesel] Update: 1982 caddy a/c refrigerant status

One step forward, two steps back. Discovered that when the compressor slipped downward when I tried to re-adjust the belts. Evidently,there was no dye in the refrigerant, so no sign of leakage was shown. I re-tightened the SUCtion line and checked the DIScharge line and tried again. This time I just tried to add refrigerant thru the SUCtion line and watch the dryer glass for bubbles to diminish. Not sure how much it took, but most of the foamy bubbles stopped. Of course, my bargain failed me, the high pressure red line connector does not depress the valve enough to register on the gauge. I will try another R-134 conversion connector at the location and try again. More later.

  Did the system get opened up or drained all the way down for a long 
period of time?  If so then you may have an ambient pressure system 
full of non compressible gasses along with your R-134a.  If so the 
system would need evacuated to a solid vacuum and refilled.  
If not then see if you have a sight glass.  Some are inline and some 
are on the reciever/drier.  Fill until the bubbles almost go away at 
a slightly increased idle.
  Of course you want to check your high and low side pressures to 
be sure they maintain within specs for the given ambient temp while 
doing so.
