[Vwdiesel] What to look for to find a hydraulic lifter tap

I checked the lifters and found 3 of the 8 were flat. The other 5 were still pumped up and spoungie.
OK, most likely one of these 3 will not pump back up and that was my bad one.
But, when I went to get the new lifters, they are flat as well, so not sure here.
new lifters must pump up and it can take 5 minutes of running to get them to pump up as I learned on a 1.8 gas engine I did the head on once.
So, I changed these 3 figuring one of them is my bad one.
New pump is on but I dropped the keyway from the old 1.6 pump gear down in the lower belt cover when I popped the gear off, so that needs to come off to fitch it out of there, ARGGG. Not easy on the vanagon with the muffler right in front of the lower pulley.
bed time now.

I would change them all out. That is what I did. I had a bad lifter tap when
I installed the new head that I had sitting in the attic for two years. It
turns out that the pressure from the cam sitting on some keeping the valves
open caused issues with the lifters not to pump up. I learned the hard way
and will always store a rebuilt head with the cam out if it.

Hi all, I finally had some time to spend on the 1.9na to get it ready for
the newly rebuild 1.9na pump.
In the past few months before the 1.6na pump quit, I noticed a lifter tap
when the motor was hot, but nothing when cold. This is a hydraulic head.
So, since I have it all apart I was going to remove the cam to inspect the
lifters.
I had already replaced 2 lifters on exhaust #1 and exhaust #2 from when the
motor had been timed wrong and cracked these 2 lifters from piston
contact stress.
I was going to remove each one with a magnet and inspect for ?????
I have 8 new ones, should I not fart around and replace them all and keep
these as "spares"
If I ever get the AAZ put together I can swap this new set over to that
head, so the $60 I paid for the new lifters would not be wasted.
Suggestions please.
