[Vwdiesel] FW: VW Half-Shaft

Hello All,

My 90 Jetta is back on the road. Thank you Rudy, James, William and Bryan. Receiving other peoples evaluations goes a long way to making the decisions on the best method.

That dished washer and circlip most likely came from the tranny shaft that the Axle Flange is mounted on. I looked that area over and the shaft end is flush with inside of the flange.

I did tap on the flange lightly with a hammer to try and get the flange moved back on the shaft. If I had it to do over, I'd use a socket larger than the shaft and use more force with the hammer. However, time was a deciding factor and, finding that the inner CV was held in place with its' own circlip, I moved ahead and reassembled. After all, before dissassembly, not knowing that washer and circlip were not attached didn't seem to effect the working of the parts and pieces.

What kind of force from what source could have exerted the power to pop off that circlip?

Why wouldn't that flange move back on the shaft with some light tapping?

My next step now is to order a Bently Manual or two. I would like to know why that Axle Flange moved on the shaft and make the necessary repairs. It's no fun sitting on the side of the road with a disabled vehicle.

Thanks again,

Gerry

After I had unbolted it from the transmission, I found a dished out washer and a circlip on the ground, of course, covered with black grease. I suspect that the tranny CV joint is not in the exact location that the VW designers had specified.
