[Vwdiesel] FW: VW Half-Shaft

If it's from the flange then you DO have a couple issues that need taken care of. As I recall, the
shaft is in the flange, then the washer, then the clip then a seal over it. No seal, gear oil gets
into the CV boot/grease and dilutes it making for a noisy/failing joint and damaging the boot. Not
to mention the fact that the flange isn't actually FASTENED in place and is only being held by
the length of the axle shaft assembly. There's a clip/snap ring that holds the CV to that end
of the shaft but I don't think there's any washer behind it so that sort of narrows it down to
someone didn't put the clip on properly AND left off the seal. The seal is a big, rubber coated
cap that fits over the whole inset of the flange, about 1 1/4" dia.

Subject: [Vwdiesel] FW: VW Half-Shaft
Hello All,
My 90 Jetta is back on the road. Thank you Rudy, James, William and Bryan.
Receiving other peoples evaluations goes a long way to making the decisions on
the best method.
That dished washer and circlip most likely came from the tranny shaft that the
Axle Flange is mounted on. I looked that area over and the shaft end is flush
with inside of the flange.
I did tap on the flange lightly with a hammer to try and get the flange moved
back on the shaft. If I had it to do over, I'd use a socket larger than the
shaft and use more force with the hammer. However, time was a deciding factor
and, finding that the inner CV was held in place with its' own circlip, I moved
ahead and reassembled. After all, before dissassembly, not knowing that washer
and circlip were not attached didn't seem to effect the working of the parts and
pieces.
What kind of force from what source could have exerted the power to pop off that
circlip?
Why wouldn't that flange move back on the shaft with some light tapping?
My next step now is to order a Bently Manual or two. I would like to know why
that Axle Flange moved on the shaft and make the necessary repairs. It's no fun
sitting on the side of the road with a disabled vehicle.
Thanks again,
Gerry

VW's but more important that they are finding ways and means to resolve those
mechanical difficulties. Further, it's good to know that other people are aware
of the 'Left-Handed drill bit tricks.'

tracked that down to the drivers side front wheel bearing. I just got the new
bearing installed today before I lost my daylight. Now it's just reinstall all
the other parts and pieces.

it from the transmission, I found a dished out washer and a circlip on the
ground, of course, covered with black grease. I suspect that the tranny CV joint
is not in the exact location that the VW designers had specified.

diesel or even another Jetta. What should I look for?

get that half-shaft repaired or I find another and install it. I don't have a
lot of experience with repairs to CV joints, etc.
