  Speaking of which...  I know you said you can't afford pistons 
and rebore but, there's so little wear limit on these engines that 
if you have a ridge, you're out of spec.  If you're out of spec, 
new rings don't control oil very long (30K miles give or take) and 
then you're back at it again.
  I had poor luck with reringing and that was on engines with little 
to no ridge.  The one that did well still spec'd out like new even 
with 100K on it.  The others all were at or beyond wear spec.
