Yeah, what's the piston clearance spec on these for a fresh bore and hone,
it's like a hair bigger than nothing, like 2 thou or something in radius.
I should also mention, it pays to check your ring end gap. Put the fresh
ring into the bore and push it down with a piston to about an inch from the
top. You have to have some gap between the ring ends. Dunno what VW spec is
on that, its worth looking up, but I wouldn't hesitate to be in or around
.020" not knowing the called for spec. Seems big, but if it ever heats up,
they can touch and the lands get pushed off the top of the piston from the
sticking ring.
Just another one of those things that should be checked but rarely are. I
know of 3 stock car motors that died from that very thing last year, just
too much hurry, not enough time to do it right.
What hone did you use Loren? Dingle ball or flat stone?
