[Vwdiesel] Go for head studs or bolts

Hi Bill;
You are right you need a tranny from a north south application. I
just finished in May a trip from Washington state to my daughters in
Maryland and more, a total of over 8000 miles in my 1981 Dasher 1.6 diesel 4
dr. It had a terribly short 4 speed and I didn't have a compatible 5 speed
so I used a 1988 VW Fox 4 speed gasser tranny. It is much taller and fourth
gear is almost as tall as Quantum 4 cyl turbo diesel 5 speed tranny. The
Dasher loves the VW Fox four speed and will travel down the road at freeway
speeds with no trouble ( averaged just under 50 mpg for the trip). The neat
thing about the late 80's VW Fox four speed is it is a direct fit.
The Quantum 4 cyl 5 sp tranny such as in Turbo diesel is not near as
much trouble to fit as Kurt suggests in his answer to your post. I have one
in my 1981 Dasher diesel 1.6 station wagon. There are two tricks to fitting,
one is the fact that you need all the gear shift mechanism from the 5 speed
donor car including the shift tower from inside the car since the shift gate
for the 5 speed is on the opposite side of the tower from the four speed.
And one needs to lengthen the metal piece to the transmission mount an inch
or so to keep from having to do a lot of pounding on the bottom of your
Dasher to give the 5 speed room to fit. Audi 4000 5 speed tranny's also fit
but you have to be sure you get a tall one. Some Audi 4000's will have a 5th
gear that isn't much taller than your Dasher 4 speed.
Any of the above options make your Dasher a freeway car out of what
is now either a town car or a freeway accident looking for a place to
happen.
If you need a VW Fox tall four speed to replace the tranny in your
Dasher let me know and I will deliver one to your house for 150 bucks when
I'm coming to California sometime this winter.

Reply to Doyt W Echelberger. Thank you for the offer but I don't think a
Jetta transmission would fit as the Rabbit/Golf/Jetta engines are east west
or traverse engines whereas the Dasher & Quantum engines are north south
engines. I believe the transmissions are different & the only 5 speed
transmission that would fit a Dasher would be from a Quantum. If by chance
it would fit, I have a 5 speed Rabbit transmission that could serve as a
donor.
