Rolf, the more I think about it, the more it makes sense that your
disconnected-pipe experience would have killed the MAF. After all, the MAF
works by heating an element, which is in turn cooled by the intake air flow,
and the intake 'mass' is measured by how much cooling occurs. Well in your
case, the cooling was ~zero due to the disco pipe, so the MAF element likely
got overheated and damaged.
