Hi Matt;
Again Giles performance pump rebuilds might be the best thing since
sliced bread. I personally have a very hard time believing he has found
something new that is not common knowledge to pump rebuilders who have been
rebuilding Bosch .pumps since before most of us were born. I do know that
turning up the fuel screw will supply more fuel throughout the rev range. I
built a 1.6 diesel turbo engine for a Rabbit pickup. I first used an
aftermarket BAE turbo. I think because of the design of their exhaust
manifold and intake manifold that exhaust gas temperatures were dangerously
high. I was running a good Ispro pyrometer pre turbo. I tried every setting
up and down on the pump trying to keep the heat in check and couldn't, I
finally changed over to a VW Jetta turbo system and it ran fine like it
should. Since I had spent weeks fiddling with the pump etc. I was into
adjusting anything. One day I decided that the 850+ RPM idle speed specified
in my Bentley was higher than I wanted so I turned the Idle down. Low and
behold the rig then had almost no power. It would start and run but barely.
Instead of turning the idle back up I turned in the fuel screw and it ran
fine throughout the whole power range. I later went back to the correct
Idle adjustment and backed off on the fuel screw. I know that turning the
idle screw up or down affects fuel delivery at all speeds and I know that
the fuel screw does also.
If you need a pump rebuilt go to Giles It's only a few hundred bucks
more than you would spend at home and over the life of the car it won't mean
much. All I am saying is it is hard for me to belive Giles is smarter than
all the other pump rebuilders over the years. Also for me he lives almost
3000 miles away and in another country which makes it hard to deal with a
problem if one arises.
