[Vwdiesel] Must face the music on a coolant leak I guess

  Yup but not highly likely.

  It'll probably be just fine so long as you watch the level.  I've had 
similar prolems with the pickup and tend to believe it's the coolant 
cap or cap to reservoir seal surface.  A new cap helped but didn't
fix it.  Once the level gets close to the bottom of visible, it stays 
there!  
  Could easily be a really small weep at any hose connection or out 
the bottom of the water pump.  Small enough it evaporates but 
doesen't drip.  I've had those before too.
