  Perhaps you could find a list member that could do or help you do it?
Replacing the valve guides is pretty straightforward, same with the 
valves but the seats will need ground and then the stem length 
adjusted (ground).  $500 seems like quite a bit for gaskets and 
fluids too, unless that's going to include timing stuff, belts and 
such as well...
