Update:
I borrowed a stud puller from a guy - proceeded to break them off again
despite my most gentle disposition. So I cut the metal cap on the outside
and flipped that back, then cut the metal fold on the front side and flipped
the next layer back, and the rectangular nut with the remaining bolt fused
to it by rust came out. Now I'll probably fabricate a similar rectangular
threaded piece, put it back in there, then weld the flaps back down like
they were. Should be fine. I'll let you know...
While I was down there wrecking things, a piece of the steering rack broke
off as I got it apart from the subframe, so I'm buying a manual steering
rack to replace the power steering rack (that had been disconnected from a
leaking power steering pump for the last 2 years...). Should be a new car
by the time I'm all done.
