I had the same dilema with the 89 I got a few years ago.

It had super dark after-market tint on the sides and back.

I hate the stuff.

For mobsters and pimps (including the Hollywood and political kind).

I noticed one day, it was peeling a little on one of the side windows, so I
grasped the tag and gave it a gentle tug. I found, if I kept a steady,
gentle tension on it, perpedicular to the glass, it would peel off, not
leaving a trace.

The adhesive seemed to be more like a static cling than an elastic glue. it
held tight until the instant of release, then let go suddenly.

I cleared all the side glass, but chickened on the rear for the same reason
you did (the defroster).

The following spring, on a warm sunny day, I got brave and tried the rear.

I used a razor blade scraper to lift the corners, and started to pull
straight up, perpendicular to the glass.

As I reached the defroster, I slowed down and reduced the tension.

To my surprise, I discovered that the plastic did not adhere as tightly to
the film that supports the defroster, and the tint pulled away from it more
easily. No damage was incured, and it works fine yet.

DISCLAIMER ! Y M M V ! !

Good luck .. Keep the razor blade away from the defroster!
