[Vwdiesel] OT Somewhat--diesel tractor

I have a 31-hp Asian tractor with a 3-cylinder diesel engine that has a battery ground problem I think I've solved, but I have a couple questions.
 
The tractor only would activate the starter solenoid, not the starter itself.  I found by running an extra ground (10 gauge) to one of the starter mounting bolts that I could get it to work, so I'm planning to disassemble the ground and clean up the contact points.
 
However, I found  that the extra bit of cable I used for the extra ground got warm while I cranked the starter for just a few seconds, and wondered if that indicates another problem?
 
Secondly, I wonder if I should establish an improved ground between the frame and the engine?
