I think that 10 gauge is likely just not big enough to provide a good
ground. The ground wire needs to be sized the same as the battery
positive wire - it carries the same kind of amps. (Assuming that it is
the only path back to the battery.) So basically it means that the
ground side of your starter is REALLY dirty and needs to be taken care
of.
