Yeap, HF does sell a piece of junk for $15, not sure how effective it would be,
it looks like a fish tank air bubbler that works in reverse, ??
I am wondering if Advanced Auto Parts of one of the FLAPS like places we have in
the east will rent one of these.
TIF Instruments TIFXP1A MPC Style Multi-Gas Refrigerant Leak Detector
The sell this and this would make the job easy.
Many tools they sell are available for rent at Advanced Auto, even if they are
brand new off the shelf. You pay in full for the item and return it with-in 45
days for a complete refund. CRAZY. But, good for us.

I think vacuum is just to get water/crap out of the system for increased
longevity. Not strictly required for it to 'work'.
FYI Harbor Freight sells a cheap vacuum gizmo that operates from compressed air
supply (go figure), it has AC fittings so I assume is intended for AC work...

Yes, I would like to know as well. Must you use a vacuum to suck everything out
