Should a generic O-ring of the correct ID work in this instance? Does the
smoke screw affect the cold start timing at all? Or would the large RPM
variance be a smpli matter of adjusting the cable?
Not quite. Generic o-rings are generally buna-n. Big no-no around
petroleum,
probably viton.
By turning up the fuel delivery it WILL turn up the idle but that's not
the way
to do it. Idle is turned up with the idle stop screw on top of the pump.
There's
an identical full throttle screw on the other side of the top. "Fast
idle" should
be adjusted with the rod length from the cold start advance lever.
Currently she smokes hard under heavy acceleration with what looks like
unburnt fuel (white) mixed with the usual black smoke. Would this indicate
someone buggering with the smoke screw already?
Unburned fuel is white, too much is black. Almost sounds like you might
need
injectors. If it's over 120K miles, it probably does and do them BEFORE
dinking
with any fueling. Also have a new air filter so you get proper
atomization and air
flow to the engine. THEN you can start the small can of worms of toying
with your
fueling. You should have a pyrometer before doing much of it.
You can safely leave that screw backed out a itsy bit at a time until
you get rid
of your black smoke.
