[Vwdiesel] pulley alignment

  Happy turkey day everybody!
 I'm in the process of changing my timing belt and water pump.
It appears that the crank pulley is behind the water pump pulley
by about 3/16 of an inch.  This is not the first time I've 
encountered pulley misalignment on these vws. In fact, the last
three engines I've worked on all had some kind of out of plane
misalignment. Is this chronic w vws?  Do I just need to space
the crank pulley out  a bit? Or find another pulley? Or maybe 
there is a short nose version of the water pump. Or perhaps a
water pump pulley that is in align w the crank pulley.
Have u all encountered this and what have u done to remedy the
situation?
