I would keep with the 1.6TD, especially if it is not 11mm bolts on the head.
Plenty of reserve power on the TD, just turn up the power screw.

The 1.5 ran well only in the 2/3 weight of the Rabbit.

As well as the diesel.net site, there is Loren here with lots of Dasher exp, 
and there is a Dasher site called "D.O.G.S."
