Travis, I'm x-posting your thread to the TDI list in case anybody there has
bright ideas...
If it's an exhaust I'd expect it to be gone in the morning after everything
has a chance to cool/contract.
Also you mentioned being in the mountains... I wonder if it could be
altitude related. Maybe just a minor boost/vacuum leak, as mentioned. If
you can find a way to pressurize the intake without the engine running(does
your friend have compressed air? Maybe even a bicycle pump or tire
inflator), that would be a good troubleshooting tool.
