Hi all,

Merry Christmas to you all !
I normally lurk and learn, but this time I have a situation to submit.
I have an '01 Jetta GLS/TDI 5spd., stock, 300,398 miles as of today ( my goal is 500k before "backup status"). Regular maintenence ( tbelts/tensioners,fluids/filters,ect ). I was driving along when my PS went out ( no noise or trauma, just stiffer steering) and the batt light came on.Car ran fine before and after the incident... Long story short:The belt was off, but still in perfect condition.Other items looked OK, nothing out of place but the belt itself. Drove to dealer on batt power, no other issues. FYI, I had an alt. pulley failure last April at 285k- alternator pulley, tensioner, idler pulley were all replaced. The Snellville, Ga. VW dealer tells me I now have a seized alternator, and it'll be 1,425.00 to replace the alternator, alternator pulley, tensioner, and belt. Questions:

After only 15k, should the tensioner and idler pulley be due for replacement after an alt. failure ?
What's the best replacement alternator or are they all similar ?
How badly am I being proctologized at 1,425.00 ?

Thanks VERY much for your help !

Sincerely,
