I had mine replaced with NEW OEM Bosch a few years back and IIRC it was
about $500 (and I thought I was getting reamed). I see Boraparts has a new
OEM 120 Amp OEM Bosch/Valeo for $300, the tensioner for $90 and idler for
$25. So their talking a grand in labor...
I also only had a pulley failure, and the mechanic argued that with ~140k
we should just do the whole alt as it may not last much longer. I guess in
your case the same logic would have been sound.
Unless there's something obviously wrong with the tensioner/idler, there's
no reason to replace it. I'd say that either: A) they replace it as a
matter of course every time (to pad the bill), or B) they didn't actually
replace it last time!
I would advise that you find a good independent and stop patronizing the
stealership in the future, but as for now you may have a problem. Since
you drove it there, I guess you could ask them to charge the battery and
drive it back out. :)
Here's the Trusted TDI Mechanics list, but it doesn't look like there are
any particularly close to you.
