I had a Dasher that ate the things for Breakfast, Lunch, & Dinner, I attribute this to the fact it didn't have the load reduction relay the later VWs got. It failed on me in a fast food drive through, in desperation I pulled the connector of the back of the switch and plugged it into my spare switch. I then used a screw drive to get the car going, after that I'd put the switch and screw driver in the glove box. The new starting procedure was unlock steering column plug switch in start car & drive off. I always kept a spare switch in the glove box after that.
