[Vwdiesel] Ignition switches

I had a 90 Audi 200 that would eat switches as well, but a major bear to change that one.
I ran it for a year with a switch hanging down and a screw driver.  I have the same issue with the Vanagon, but not as bad.  My remote start on the van is an extra wire from the solenoid to the battery coiled up for when I need it (battery is in the engine compartment on a diesel) when the ignition switch acts up, I touch the spare wire from the solenoid to the + side of the battery and she fires right up.

I had a Dasher that ate the things for Breakfast, Lunch, & Dinner, I attribute this to the fact it didn't have the load reduction relay the later VWs got. It failed on me in a fast food drive through, in desperation I pulled the connector of the back of the switch and plugged it into my spare switch. I then used a screw drive to get the car going, after that I'd put the switch and screw driver in the glove box. The new starting procedure was unlock steering column plug switch in start car & drive off. I always kept a spare switch in the glove box after that.
