A 914 swap would work, but the need to run cooling to a front radiator 
is a bit awkward.  IMHO, the perfect swap candidate is the 924, as it 
IS an Audi and the 2.0 TD and 2.5 TDI will bolt straight in.  However, 
if using a VE pump engine, IIRC the rear sprocket from the cam to the 
fuel pump sticks out of the hood, so my solution is to cut the weld on 
the torque tube and rotate the entire bell housing around a few degrees 
to lay the engine over a bit more.  Of course, using a PD version 
might work better, or of course a CRD version in a 924S would be truly 
fantastic, but a lot more money than the junk I have laying around. 
 Not that I have ever thought of that (for the M471 and 2.0 TD C2 in 
my storage).
