If you want to go to the effort, you could change the color I suppose. Get a theater lighting gel in the color you want. I don't remember how long they end up being in there. I like the green so I kept that when I had mine apart.
I don't think you can find brighter bulbs. All you can do is clean it well and if that doesn't do it then pop off the white "hood" on top and paint the inside of it with a white or silver paint. I didn't have white so...
I'd cleaned it and still couldn't read anything but the speedo needle at night. After painting it's nothing to read by but it's now 90% visible. I forget if I superglued it back together or used a soldering iron to melt the friction welded tabs back. Been a year or two... Probably could change the gel at the same time as painting. Mine was a brownish/yellowish inside, rather than white so it made quite a difference.

Subject: [Vwdiesel] 81 Caddy dash
When I have the dash out to correct the odometer issue, are there
ifferent lamps that can be installed in the stock holders that will
rovide more/brighter light on the dash? My dash has green "lenses" over
he bulbs that produce a dim white light on the dash. I prefer an orange
ash like some of my other vehicles but the green filter seems to
revent that. Is there a brighter bulb that will fit the stock sockets
or a white dash?
