BE SURE you check your thermoswitch! It will have the on and off temps stamped into it. Be sure youre thermostat matches, if not then change the thermoswitch or get a stat to match it. Make sure it's not part of your problem as well.
The diesel headgaskets rarely get water into the oil unless it totally blows. If the seal around the oil passage (in the head gasket) fails *usually goes kidney shaped) then they sometimes leak into the oil and will often seep out between the head and block. It's the second head bolt from the tranny, on the pump-side of the engine, about #3 injector.
Don't think I've ever noticed burning glycol smoke from one of these diesels. When the gasket goes it leaks a bit and usually blows out rather than leak in, then it blows really good.

Make sure your oil leak isn't working around from a leaking valve cover gasket, ventilation hose connection or the oil pressure sending unit. Light coolant loss is usually from a hose fitting, failing, plastic, head fitting or water pump just starting to leak. Heater cores and radiators can leak lightly as well and in the right weather, you don't notice unless you really check for it.

Here's one of those head gaskets on ebay. http://www.ebay.com/itm/like/300602206324?lpid=82 I gave up trying to find the part number, NCIS and Person of Interest night! :-D

Subject: [Vwdiesel] winter update, and something else

hello all, i found a thermo by walher that i had purchased several years ago,
till in the wrapper and so i will use that.
everal of yall have suggested a rubber valve cover gasket, who's brand do u
ecommend for the valve cover gasket,. i have seen only cork.
omething that has me concerned is there is some oil that leaked from the middle
f the head where it meets the block, i don't see any other signs of a head leak
ther than it has run a little hotter that usual though i had theorized that i
ad maybe damaged the thermostat when the cooling fan failed over the summer and
t first ran a little hotter. i don't see any oil in the coolant or discolor
white exhaust) or operational difference. i have had to occasionally added some
oolant that i attributed to the thermostat.i was going to have a local mechanic
o the thermo though i am thinking i should first have him pressurize the system
o look for leaks. any other thoughts from the group on this one.
ay
