PORSCHE TO PRO RALLY R&T May 1993
--------------------

R&T Contributing Photographer Jeff Zwart plans to race a
Porsche 911 Carrera 4 in the Open class of the 1993 SCCA
Subaru Pro Rally Series. With two European Ford Sierras,
the ever-present AUDIs and a pair of lighweight Mitsubitchy
Eclipses as competition, the quest for the U.S. Rally
championship should be more exciting than ever.

_Autoweek_ COMPETITION THIS WEEK, May 3, 1993
--------------------------------

His wife's labor pains kep defending champ Paul Chionoere out of the
SCCA Wild West event at Olympia, Wash. So Choiniere's stepfather/car
owner John Buffum hopped in for the first time in five years and
WON IN THE DEBUT OF THE TEAM's NEW AUDI QUATTRO S2.
For the first six stages, Buffum staged a close battle with Rod
Millen, another former series star who was in WA to test a
customer's Hyundai Elantra. Buffum had a 31-second lead over Millen
when the Hyundai suffered electrical problems.
Buffum and his co-driver, Jeff Becker, went on to win by THREE MINUTES
over a Ford Escort Cosworth (which Buffum also prepared) driven by
Carl Mirrill. Merrill actually won seven of the final eight stages
with co-driver J. Jon Wickens. Dick Corley and Martin Headland
finished third in a Mitsubitchy Eclipse.
Lon Peterson and Bill Gutzmann finished fourth overall and first
in the Production GT class, while Peter Cunningham and Charles Bradley
won Production class in an Acura Integra and Guy Light and Dave White
won trucks in a GMC Sonoma.
The rally also marked the debut of Jeff Zwart's Millen-prepared
Porsche Carrera 4, which finished fifth despite some high-speed
handling problems.
Zwart's car competes with a normally aspirated engine but weighs
only 2800 pounds and has been equipped with a Paris-Dakar gearbox.
It will do 0-60 in less than five seconds.
