ox sens light swtch

We seem to be having a run on oxygen sensor light switch resetting 
questions. So, let me add my own. I have no problem resetting the light 
on my wife's '84 Jetta GLI. But on my '86 4000csq I seem to be only able 
to reset the light to last c.a. 5Kmiles instead of 30K miles.

Anyone have any pointers on this? I really dislike removing the 
instrument cowling to do this. And I'm worried I'll do some damage 
removing it this frequently. Do wish the reset were under the hood.
