Re: TQC builder engine and performance

Hi Dave..

FWIW here's my 2 cents worth. As near as I can tell, you are looking at an
engine in the wreck with engine code MC, 2.2L,8.4:1 cr,81 x 86.4 bore &
stroke,157 BHP. Sound right? Your UR-Q should have about the same output
but without some of the later technology. It also has 79.5 x 86.4 bore &
stroke which makes the internals impossible to switch without machine work.

Performance Car magazine has a recent article on the RS2 with some good
theory on how they get 100 extra hp (315) from the 2.2 engine...bigger
passages in & out, bigger turbo, bigger intercooler, higher boost
pressure, different cam, bigger injectors at higher pressure. All this seems
obvious, but there was an article in EC about a guy in Dedham (I went to
see him but can't remember his name) who tripped over the fact that the air
passage between the air box & the throttle on some 4 cylinder VW's was
restricted. So he markets something called the Sewer Pipe which is just a
bigger passage way and gets more hp (just like you would with exhaust). My
point is, talk to Ned Ritchie about the micro details(then tell the rest of
us!)

The wrecked engine will probably run ok. This hit happens a lot. The
driveshaft never makes it, havn't seen any rear end problems, saw one
transmission with hidden problems after 1000 miles or so.

Try calling European Transaxel in Bend Oregon about the differential.
These people have been excellent for us, and they will rebuild your unit
(instead of exchanging it) if you want.

The distributors sb the same, all they have is 1 notch in the wheel to
identify #1, the caps interchange. Don't know about the ex manifold, don't
think the heads will swap (cb wrong about that), know that about 92 m/y
there is a 'dual mass' flywheel that's supposed to help w/ vibration &
syncro operation. About 13 lbs of springs waiting to jump out at you.

My approach would be to qualify the existing engine in terms of oil
pressure & a cylinder leakdown test. If it's half decent why not just bolt
on what you need? Maybe if it needs rings & bearings, do that in the car.
Buy 'Turbo' magazine & check out the vendors. I notice that Turbo City has
a video on rebuilding them (714-771-0558). There's a lot of swapping
around compressor sections etc discussed. Cartech (210-308-8464) custom
made the intercooler for the tri-turbo Jag in EC a couple of months ago.
The butt stock intercooler on the UR-Q is good for about 30 hp and bigger
w/b better. As far as engine management, the later Audi system is better
than the original esp w/ Ned Ritchie around...but...has anyone tried
Halltech, Emtech, or Electromotive? These are laptop controlled management
systems that will map a lot of things(timing, boost, enrichment, nitrous)
and are completely flexible. Sometimes you feel like a nut, sometimes you
don't. A couple of local Bimmer guys are about to try this. I'll keep you
posted.

Of course....if one were to go hawg wild....I think one would need about a
400 hp 20v automatic UR-Q, then Ned Ritchie could jig with the whole menu
of maps in the trans computer!

ps are you in Boulder? i got my shop management program from a place on
Pearl street.
