Stupidity strikes, aka HELP!!

Conscientious Audi owner that I am ('85 5000ST, 97K), I set out this
weekend to replace the fuel filter. Simple, right? Two fittings, one
bracket bolt ... 15 minutes, tops. Or so I thought. Let the following
be a lesson to us all :-(

While attempting to remove the inlet fitting, the entire ^#$@!&*^#
filter rotated in its bracket and sheared the inlet line off.
Unfazed, I bought a brass fitting which would fit into the fuel filter
inlet, a short section of FI hose and two hose clamps. I sawed off
the mangled end of the inlet line and connected the hose between it
and the new brass fitting. You'd think I was back in business, but
noooo -- the fitting union sprayed super unleaded all over the place:
	clearly doesn't work.

The proprietor of the local VW store tells me I *have* to replace the
entire fuel line (I cringe at the thought): he doesn't think my
fitting/FI hose solution can work, even if I get the right fitting.

So ... what do you folks think? I can't believe there's no simple
solution to this (probably common) problem. Any help would be
	greatly appreciated!
