When I was shopping for tires a month back, I was told not to mix-n-match
different tires on a Quattro, as this would promote more wear on the
drivetrain. I don't know if this is total BS, but I was replacing all 4
anyways. I did put the BFG Comp T/A HR4s on, and they are doing quite
well. When I got them, I took a trip over the passes the next day, and
they performed well in the snow. Right lane was clear to some snow, left
lane was all snow, so I chose to drive in the left lane. Hey, why not, I
was usually passing people too.
I bought my tires in Seattle, and for about $2/tire more than Tire Rack,
considering shipping and install at places they ship to, compared to sales
tax and such. One thing I did buy with the tires as a lifetime 4-wheel
alignment contract for the time that I own the car. That cost me $49.95.
They think they burned me, but I rotate and balance tires every 5k, and
since I have this alignment policy, I will have that done too at the same
time. It should only extend the life of the tires.
