The rear diff lock on 4000Qs and ur-Quattros is prone to corrosion
problems. There is a clevis pin that goes through the lever arm attached
to the shaft that locks/unlocks the mechanism. This pin and the whole
assy can basically rust solid if not used frequently. It's an easy fix.
Just remove the clevis pin, lever assembly and vacuum actuator/servo and
clean-up the lever and pin with a file or snadpaper, etc. I painted all
the metal parts last time to try to slow down subsequent corrosion. Also,
coat all surfaces and parts with some heavy grease on reassembly to keep
water/salt away and further slow the corrosive process. Do *NOT* try to
force the assembly to move to free it up! You will likely break off the
end of the rod from the vacuum actuator. Take the time to remove, clean
and grease it. 'Nother hint: completely remove the bolt that holds the
lever arm onto the shaft; the shaft is grooved and the lever will still
be held onto the arm by the bolt even when the nut on the attaching bolt
is totally loose.
