I think the best way to describe the two systems is whether there is a
control marked "bi-lev".  One interesting feature about the older system
and the first year only of the new system (86) is that the rear defogger &
outside mirror heat is a relayed circuit.  In 87, and in typical VAG
fashion, there is no relay for these two high amperage items and the defog
switches burn out.  What a car!
