 I have the same year and model (1991 90quattro 20V), and my struts
consistently groan over bumps when the temp is below freezing.  I haven't
notices adverse consequences, however.

As to ventilation, in all but hot weather, I use the econ (vent) setting.  I
find heat to be ample and fast, including heat from the left side dash vent.
 I never use the "auto" setting in the cold weather.  If this doesn't work,
you may have a problem in the duct actuators.

As you probably know, the auto setting will cycle the a/c compressor on and
off as needed to cool the car.  I like to minimize use of the compressor
because it literally feels like a trailer has been hitched to the car.
