GT/4KS - Pop = no go?

Firstly, I like the suggest subject conventions, it makes it alot easier to
sort through my mail and store it.

However the real point to this message is when I got in my car ('85 GT
Coupe) to go to work this morning, as I was cranking the engine, I heard
what sounded like a "pop" come from the engine bay.  I also went from full
cranking capacity to the battery not being able to turn the engine over in
about 15 seconds.  Thank goodness I live on a hill and have an alternative
method of starting my car.  (A gravity feed improvment on the push start!
<grin>)

I have heard this pop before, and have not been able to pinpoint any damage.
It sounds just like someone has put a pin into a balloon.

Any suggestions or similar experiences?
