You are right, a switch is a switch.  If you know that you are connect-
ed to the appropriate terminals and never see the resistance of the 
switch go from zero to inifinite then you have probably located your 
problem.  It appears that you are not seeing the problem now.  Could 
the problem have been a bad connection that you inadvertantly fixed 
when you were testing the idle switch?

FYI ... I've found that if you remove the rubber boot on the back of 
the wiring harness connector that it is pretty easy to get the standard 
probe for a multimeter in there for testing.
